Paleo Shepherd’s Pie with Sweet Potato Topping

This paleo friendly shepherd’s pie is the perfect comfort food on a winter day. Topped with creamy sweet potatoes, grab a bowl and curl up by the fire.


  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 cup mushrooms
  • 1 cup green beans
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 onion
  • 4 oz tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp rosemary
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder


  1. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. For sweet potatoes- peel then place in a sauce pan with water on medium heat.
  3. For vegetables- dice up the mushrooms, carrots and onions.
  4. In a skillet on medium heat, melt coconut oil then add in ground beef and vegetables.
  5. Cook the meat until browned and vegetables are soft. Then add in water, tomato paste and all seasonings.
  6. Transfer the meat and vegetables into a 9 x 9 pie pan.
  7. For the sweet potatoes- after they are softened, drain out excess water, add ghee and begin mashing until the mixture is creamy.
  8. Add creamy sweet potatoes to the top of the pie and bake in oven for 10-15 minutes.
  9. Take out of oven, let cool and serve.
