WHAT IS CANDY CORN?

Candy corn is small triangular shaped candy thats yellow, orange and white. It is made of sugar, corn syrup, carnauba wax and artificial coloring. It looks like a replica of chicken food and was created in the late 1880's. It didn't take popularity until the 1950's when people started handing out candy at Halloween. It has now become a staple candy during the fall season. It even has it's very own day on the calendar.

Fun Fact: National Candy Corn Day is October 30th.

INGREDIENTS + SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Diced Cantaloupe- you can use regular oranges, mandarin, clementine, nectarine and peach slices in place. Whatever you choose that is an orange fruit.
  • Diced Pineapple- you can use yellow mangos in place of pineapple.
  • Whipped Cream- any type of dairy or non-dairy whipped topping works perfect. Also, greek yogurt for a serving of protein if your looking to make this parfait even healthier.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Fresh fruit is the best but not always available. So if using canned fruit, make sure to drain out all the juice before placing in cups.
  • If using canned fruit, try to buy ones that have no added extra sugar to maintain healthy sugar levels since fruit naturally has sugar.
  • Homemade, regular cool whip, redi whip or coconut whip cream can be used.
  • If you are looking to add more protein, greek yogurt is a perfect option in place of whipped topping.
  • It is best to make parfaits fresh (day of eating) and store in refrigerator until ready to serve.
