DIY homemade taco seasoning is easy, simple and a lot healthier for you. Use on tacos, chicken, seafood and ground beef to spice up any dish. Paleo + Whole 30 friendly.

Spices in healthy homemade taco seasoning

  • Chili powder
  • Cumin
  • Garlic powder
  • Oregano
  • Paprika (smoked)
  • Cinnamon
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Red pepper flakes

These are all spices you probably have on-hand.

Why make at home?

  • No fillers- store bought packets often contain preservatives, sugars, “natural flavors” aka MSG that I do not want and are not healthy for you.
  • Gluten-free- this is a gluten-free website and as stated above the “natural flavors” and other additives can sometimes contain gluten.
  • Organic Spices- I’m using organic spices in this mix. Unfortunately, spices that are not organic are pasteurized with chemicals whereas organic spices are pasteurized via a stream process. I’d rather enjoy my food without ingesting chemicals.
  • Easy + Simple- I already have these spices on hand, why not make my own seasoning? It comes together in no time.

What can I use this seasoning on?

Of course, I enjoy in my ground meat used for tacos but don’t let that stop you. Homemade taco seasoning is perfect to use on steaks, rubs, shrimp and a great way to spice up plain old chicken.

I use 2 tbsp per 1 lb of ground pork, beef, turkey, chicken or seafood.

Is this seasoning spicy?

With the use of cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes, yes, this seasoning can get spicy. The secret ingredient that isn’t in many taco seasonings is cinnamon that can add a bit of spice to it as well. You can tailor this mix to your spicy preference. If you’d like it spicier add in an additional 1/2 tsp more of cayenne pepper. If you’d like it not as spicy, omit the cayenne pepper altogether.

Storing

Seasonings and spices seem to last forever! Make sure your seasoning is sealed in an airtight container. Place it with the rest of your spices in a dark place away from sunlight. It should stay fresh for up to a year (or even longer).
