VARIATIONS

Here are a few variations and some suggestions of options to customize this dip.

  • Add a layer of shredded chicken or ground beef. This gives the dip a boost of protein.
  • Add a layer of guacamole either store bought or homemade top the dip with it once served.
  • Use your favorite blend of salsa. I am using my homemade red salsa but you could switch it up and use salsa verde (green).
  • Too create a pop of color and flavor to the refried beans, add in some green chilies.
  • Use red bell pepper chunks, instead of chopped tomatoes for the stripes.
  • Watching calories? Use a light sour cream and cream cheese.
  • Looking to make dairy free? Use dairy free sour cream, cream cheese and shredded cheese. Some of my favorite and cleaner dairy free brands are Kitehill, and Forager.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Use fresh ingredients. Try to use the freshest tomatoes and green onions so that they taste crispier and crunchier.
  • To save on time, chop up the tomatoes and green onions before assembling.
  • Use a 9x13 baking dish. This is the perfect size to create the flag and have plenty of room for the stripes and stars.
  • Use a 1 ½ inch cookie cutter to make the stars. If you don't have a star shaped cookie cutter, you can use kitchen scissors to cut the stars out of the cheese.
  • Evenly layer dip. Make sure to create even layers with the ingredients so that the dip will turn out well and the flavors will blend together.
  • Serve chilled. This dip is best served chilled or immediately after making. It does not need to be warmed up.
  • Serve with chips or vegetables.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS

This dip is perfect at any backyard BBQ or cookout. It would go great with some Buffalo Wings or can be another great dip alongside this Buffalo Chicken Dip.

You absolutely need something to wash it down on a hot afternoon so grab an iced cold Honey Lemonade or Watermelon Mint Slushie. It will be refreshing!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I don't have cookie cutters to make the stars?

You can easily create cheese stars using kitchen scissors. Or instead of cheese use a piping bag and Wilton star tip to create stars using sour cream.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, the dip can be assembled 24 hours before serving. Refrigerate covered. Hold off on the crushed blue chips until ready to serve or they can get soggy in the fridge.

STORAGE

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You may want to remove the blue chips so they don't get soggy. Add more back on when ready to enjoy again!
